I have had tinnitus for 10 years now and have hearing loss requiring me to wear hearing aids. I read an article in this months issue of Candis which states that there is a trial going on in Germany of a possible cure for Tinnitus. This entails having an injection through the eardrum which changes the message that is going to the brain from the damaged hairs thus reversing the Tinnitus!! Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else heard of this and if there are any trials in the UK I would certainly sign up for them - i'll try anything?

I have just found the article I was referring to so here's some more info.

Treatment being trialled at 20 centres in Germany, currently called AM-101, an injection given through the eardrum (under local anaesthesia) which is designed to stop the auditory nerve misfiring and sending the brain inappropriate signals.

I posted this subject on the RNID forum and have had a reply. Unfortunately AM-101 only seems to be successful if used within the first 3 months of tinnitus onset - so no use for most of us!!

Thanks for the info blondie.

Yes, unfortunately it only applies to people who have recently been diagnosed with hearing loss, not for us long termers.

Let's not despair. This is good news for all of us as it shows that research and trials are continuing. With more and more tests and funding, lets live in hope for acure soon.
