Hi I'm a 19-year-old student, suffering from tinnitus for over a month. It's a kind of constant ringing, heard +/- equally in both ears, similar to sounds around 1000 Hz. Becomes very unpleasant and loud in quiet space, but is (fortunately) easily masked by external noises such as running water, turned on computer etc. When trying to "locate", it seems to be somewhere inside the head. It's a rather strange case, though, as there is no identified cause yet - excluded noise-induced, toxic medications, trauma, injuries, diseases etc. There is no hearing loss, fortunately - excellent perception of high-pitched sounds. No other symptoms are present, no pain, dizziness or any sense of fullness. As my ENT said, the ears seem to be in good condition.
Some time ago I had a similar "spell" of tinnitus, also without any cause, which lasted for about a week. I received some medicine for busting high blood pressure instantly, and apparently the ringing disappeared. However, I always had blood pressure around 140/80, and no problems related to it. Currently I'm taking some betahistine, but see no results.
Could this be somehow related to the nervous system, any malfunction of VIII nerve? I would be grateful for any advice:) | | 08 Mar 2010 21:39 |
| Have you been subjected to any particularly loud noise near the ear in the past? I have no hearing loss up to the frequencies that audiologists measure (8kHz) but hearing loss beyond that as a result of an acoustic trauma. | I used to listen to mp3 player a lot, using the earphones, but stopped some time ago. Since then, I had a couple of audiometry tests done (before my tinnitus took off), and all of them indicated normal hearing (hearing threshold 5-10 dB throughout all frequencies). My perception of high-pitched sounds is great, even beyond 8-10 kHz, as well as understanding female voices etc. However, I sometimes have problems when talking to smb with noise in the background, e.g. on a main street. Since there is apparently no damage in the ears, I have no idea what could be the cause or whether it might be a symptom of something else going wrong... | | 10 Mar 2010 18:18 |
