| My eustachian tubes have been blocked since beginning of january this year and its driving me mad, its bad enough coping with the tinnitus. I was prescribed sudaphedrine (prescription sudafed) but have not taken it as i'm concerned about the side effects. I have tried alternative remedies but to no avail. Can anyone who might have the same problem suggest anything i can take that wont make my T louder? I'm resigned to thinking i will have to spend the rest of my life with 'cotton wool ears' and i'm only 25 :-/ | halo83 | 09 Mar 2010 17:11 |
| hi Halo, i to have this problem since all this began at xmas. all my problems are mainly in my right ear, increased T and fullness and creeping feelings.along with pain! i had an MRI on friday and go to see the ENT on wednseday of next week so hope he can tell me what is going on then. i think my E tube is blocked as i get a lot of squelching and cannot 'pop' my ear. i tried an antihistamine tablet and it made my T scream so i understand your reluctance. i do use vicks vapour rub and it helps a bit and i ese a hot water bottle to soothe the pain but beyond that i dont know what to do! i have had a terrible day with it today and have been looking on the web where i read that increasing your fluid intake can help so i am trying that so we will see! also, saw a suggestion that rubbing raw garlic cloves around the ear can help so tomorrow i will try that (hey i am desperate!) as can cutting down dairy products and sugar. also gently massaging the tubes to encourage drainage so will get hubby to give me a face and neck massage tonight. oh, also i read chewing gum can help! | debs | 09 Mar 2010 17:25 |
| also Halo, do you get headaches with it? especially in the back of the head? i also get pain in my face which i am not sure is related ENT seems forever away and my g.p is useless!!!! | debs | 09 Mar 2010 17:30 |
| Hi debs, sorry to hear you too are having similar problems. mine are mostly in my left where i have very loud T and a total blocked ear. my ears pop and crackle when i swallow and i get a wooshing sound when i yawn and at night it feels like theres blood whoosing around my ears if this makes sense. sorry to hear about the antihistimine tablet that sounds really scary. thanks for your suggestions. i havebeen trying A.vogel plantago (google it) and its meant to be good, but i have not been using it every day as it really kept me awake at night doing weird things to my ears but didnt seem to shift the fluid (and this is just a herbal remedy, dread to think what a prescription med would do) someone told me about a sini pot which you use to flush out the nostrils but again not sure if this works. i hope all goes well with the ENT, could we please keep in touch as u are the first person to have similar problems to me. my GP too is useless. can i ask where about are the tubes so i can massage? are you on facebook at all? | halo83 | 09 Mar 2010 17:42 |
| yeah debs i do get headaches in the back of my head and i also suffer migraines sometimes, i was prescribed with menieres disease as well as i suffer vertigo spells sometimes although snce cutting out some foods this has decresed a bit. my T is noise induced from a very loud concert, that was 18 months ago and last year was good for me, i had habituated my T and couldnt hear it most days but before xmas i had a bad flu and bang-my tubes get more blocked up, T gets louder and as u know urself it gets very frustrating. the doctors dont sem to have a clue. | halo83 | 09 Mar 2010 17:45 |
| oh i forgot to add i went to ENT, 2 months after i got T in 2008, all he did was give me an 'aural toilet' which is basically a full clean out of the ear. didnt do much, so i hope you have better luck. I hate them prodding my ears all the time it makes the pain worse and now that my tubes are blocked my doc hasnt even suggested going back to the ENT, but he admitted that the medical profession know less about the ear than the brain. i suggest they start learning. | halo83 | 09 Mar 2010 17:48 |
| how long did you take the plantago for? i think i've had it now since early feb but most i have taken it is like 4 days in a row, so not sure how long it takes to work or if it works at all. that netipot sounds quite scary. I have a nasal spray the doc gave me, maybe i should try that, obv checking its got no ototoxic stuff in it. only reason i didnt try it yet is it can give you nosebleeds. oh the joy. I will have to try that one with my boyfriend lol good excuse for a massage me thinks. cheers and good luck for next week. also if u do have facebook and want to add me search kelly mcmullan - i'm the one with the picture of a black and white cat on my profile | halo83 | 09 Mar 2010 17:55 |
Debs, I hope that you have a good ENT specialist and that you take his/her advice. Don't be "fobbed off" by the ENT which often happens and strongly state your concerns and problem. Sudafed is a very temporary and superficial "treatment" and, apart from the unpleasant side effects to the rest of your body, I have found that it simply dries up the problem and makes it worse. A more "radical" but most effective "solution" is to physically drain the E Tubes and the "best" way is for your ENT to insert "grommets" in the problem ear(s).. They immediately drain away excess fluids and work for months, potentailly permanently. Just ask your ENT about this. It has certainly worked for me (to drain the fluid) and you never know, it COULD relieve the tinnitus, but, that, as we all know is another story entirely. Best of luck.
